    After the 2016 Copa, he retired by saying "it was 4 finals, it wasn't for me". Many assume that he meant that by going out of the picture, Argentina would perform with less pressure.
    Many may have seen the video where they burn his shirt on Rosario's monument, but there was also a country and even worldwide support for him to change his mind.
    He came back because in his words "he wanted to set an example to the kids that followed him to keep trying". 90. As an Argentinian that always believed in Messi, I would tell you that there were two moments leading to this "new" Messi for Argentina. One is after friendly match against Venezuela where Messi come back after a fake retirement from the seleccion. Where he encountered a new group and after the match at dinner everyone was watching him eat without talking. After that, Rodrigo De Paul and Paredes decided to integrate him to the group making him the leader but at the same level of everyone else.
    The second point was after the Copa america semifinals against Brazil where he decided to go all in against conmebol. That where he finally decided that being polite was important but Argentina and this new group were more important than everything else.
    After that loss against Brazil Argentina never lost again until the loss againts Saudi at the start of the world cup.
